About
Wayanad travel guide
Wayanad is a plateau in the Western Ghats of northern Kerala, 700 to 2,100 m up, covered in coffee, pepper and cardamom and bordered by three wildlife sanctuaries.
It is the quieter Kerala hill destination — less developed than Munnar, with more forest and fewer tour buses.
When to go
Best time to visit Wayanad
October to May is the long dry season, and the best window for trekking and wildlife. December to February is cool and clear; March to May is warm but still comfortable at altitude.
June to September brings very heavy monsoon rain — among the wettest places in India. Waterfalls are at full power and the hills are spectacularly green, but treks close and landslides affect the ghat roads.
Highlights
Top things to do in Wayanad
The places most Wayanad itineraries are built around.
Chembra Peak
A climb past a heart-shaped lake to Wayanad's highest point at 2,100 m. Permits are limited daily.
Edakkal Caves
Neolithic petroglyphs carved into a rock cleft, some over 6,000 years old.
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Elephant, gaur and occasionally tiger, on the corridor linking Nagarhole and Bandipur.
Soochipara and Meenmutty falls
Tiered waterfalls reached on short forest walks, at their best just after the rains.
Banasura Sagar Dam
India's largest earth dam, with island-dotted water and speedboat rides.
Coffee and spice plantations
Estate walks and stays through coffee, pepper and cardamom.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Wayanad?
Three to four days. Two is enough for the caves and a waterfall; four lets you add Chembra, a safari and a plantation stay without driving daily.
FAQs
Wayanad questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Wayanad trip.
How is it different from Munnar?
Wayanad is lower, more forested and far less developed, with wildlife as a real draw. Munnar is higher, cooler and dominated by tea estates and viewpoints. Wayanad suits people who want forest and quiet; Munnar suits first-time visitors wanting the classic scenery.
How do we get there?
Kozhikode (Calicut) is the nearest airport at around two and a half hours, and Kannur is similar. From Bangalore it is around six hours by road, which is why it is a popular weekend trip from there.
Will we see wildlife?
Elephant and deer sightings are common on the sanctuary safaris; gaur reasonably so. Tigers are present but rarely seen. Early morning safaris give the best odds.
Do we need permits for Chembra?
Yes, issued by the forest department at the base, with a daily cap on numbers. The trek closes during heavy rain and sometimes in peak fire season, so check before planning around it.
