About
Kerala travel guide
Kerala runs for 600 km down India's south-western coast, between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, and packs backwaters, tea country, beaches and rainforest into a strip rarely more than 120 km wide.
That compactness is what makes it work as a holiday — you can wake up in a hill station and be on a houseboat by evening without a punishing drive.
When to go
Best time to visit Kerala
October to March is the main season: dry, warm and the best window for backwaters and beaches. December and January are the busiest and priciest, with Kochi at its liveliest.
June to September is the south-west monsoon — heavy rain, dramatic green, low rates, and the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment. April and May are hot and humid on the coast but pleasant up in Munnar.
Highlights
Top things to do in Kerala
The places most Kerala itineraries are built around.
Alleppey backwaters
An overnight houseboat through the canals and paddy fields of the Kuttanad.
Munnar tea estates
Hills of clipped tea at 1,600 m, with Eravikulam National Park and the Nilgiri tahr above it.
Fort Kochi
Chinese fishing nets, a Portuguese church, a Dutch palace and India's oldest active synagogue, all walkable.
Thekkady and Periyar
A tiger reserve around a lake, with boat safaris and spice plantation walks.
Varkala and Kovalam
Cliff-backed beach at Varkala, the more developed resort strip at Kovalam.
Kathakali and Kalaripayattu
Classical dance-drama and one of the world's oldest martial arts, performed nightly in Kochi.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Kerala ?
Seven to eight days for the classic loop — Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and a beach. Five is enough if you drop either the hills or the beach.

FAQs
Kerala questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Kerala trip.
How much does a Kerala trip cost?
It depends mostly on houseboat category and hotel standard rather than on distance, since the driving is short. Our packages list what is included at each level, and all of them can be adjusted up or down.
Is one night on a houseboat enough?
For most people yes. The boats moor by early evening and move again after breakfast, so a second night adds comfort rather than new scenery. Two nights suit those wanting to go deeper into the Kuttanad canals.
Is the monsoon a bad time to go?
Not necessarily. June to September is wet but spectacular, rates drop sharply and it is the authentic season for Ayurveda. Backwater cruises still run. If you want beach time, come in winter instead.
What is the best order to travel in?
Kochi, then up to Munnar, across to Thekkady, down to Alleppey and finish on the coast. It flows geographically and ends somewhere restful.
