About
Meghalaya travel guide
Meghalaya is a plateau of limestone and rainforest in India's north-east, holding the wettest places on earth, hundreds of caves, and the living root bridges that Khasi communities have grown from fig roots over generations.
It is a walking destination more than a driving one — the best of it is at the bottom of valleys, down flights of stone steps.
When to go
Best time to visit Meghalaya
October to April is the dry season and the practical window. October and November are at their greenest after the rains with waterfalls still running; December to February is cool and clear.
May to September is the monsoon, and Mawsynram and Cherrapunji record some of the highest rainfall anywhere on earth. Waterfalls are at their most dramatic, but trails are slippery and views are often lost to cloud. November brings the Shillong cherry blossom season.
Highlights
Top things to do in Meghalaya
The places most Meghalaya itineraries are built around.
Double Decker Living Root Bridge
At Nongriat, down around 3,000 steps from Tyrna — a steep descent and a harder climb back.
Cherrapunji and Mawsynram
The wettest inhabited places on earth, with Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters falls nearby.
Dawki and Shnongpdeng
The Umngot river, clear enough in winter that boats appear to float on air.
Mawlynnong
Billed as Asia's cleanest village, with a sky walk through the canopy.
Laitlum Canyons
A grassland ridge above a deep gorge, half an hour from Shillong.
Mawsmai and Arwah caves
Limestone caves with formations and fossils, lit and walkable.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Meghalaya?
Five to six days from Guwahati: Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong, with a full day for the root bridge trek. Seven if you want to stay overnight at Nongriat.

FAQs
Meghalaya questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Meghalaya trip.
How hard is the root bridge trek?
Around 3,000 steps down and the same back up, typically two hours each way. The descent is hard on knees and the climb out is genuinely tiring. Staying overnight at Nongriat splits it in two and is what we recommend for most people.
When is the Umngot river at its clearest?
November to March, once the rains have stopped and the silt has settled. During and just after the monsoon it runs brown and the famous clear-water effect disappears entirely.
Do we need permits?
Indian nationals do not need a permit for Meghalaya. Foreign nationals must register on arrival in some districts. Bangladesh border areas like Dawki have their own checks, which we handle.
When is the cherry blossom?
Mid-November, usually for about two weeks around the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. The exact dates shift each year with the weather.
