About
Tawang travel guide
Tawang sits at 3,048 m in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh, reached over the Sela pass, and holds the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the second largest in the world.
Getting there is most of the trip: two long days of driving from Guwahati through the Kameng valley, over a 4,170-metre pass, past high lakes and war memorials.
When to go
Best time to visit Tawang
March to October is the practical season. March to May brings rhododendron in flower along the Sela approach; September and October give the clearest mountain views of the year.
Sela pass can close after snow between December and February, cutting Tawang off for days at a time. Winter is beautiful and very cold, with snow around the monastery, but travel becomes unpredictable. The monsoon brings landslide risk on the Bomdila road.

FAQs
Tawang questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Tawang trip.
Do we need a permit?
Yes. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Bumla Pass requires an additional permit arranged locally. We handle these with your booking.
How long is the drive from Guwahati?
Around 450 km but two full days, usually breaking at Dirang or Bomdila. The roads are mountain roads and progress is slow; this is not a distance that translates into hours the way it would on a highway.
Is the altitude a problem?
Tawang is at 3,048 m and Sela at 4,170 m. Most people are fine as the ascent is gradual over two days, but the pass can leave you breathless and the overnight stops at Dirang and Bomdila help you adjust.
What is the weather like?
Cold year-round at Tawang, with nights below freezing from November to March. Even in summer, carry proper layers — the pass is exposed and the weather changes quickly.
