About
Ooty travel guide
Ooty sits at 2,240 m in the Nilgiris, laid out by the British as a summer capital and still carrying the botanical garden, the lake and the toy train that came with that.
It pairs naturally with Coonoor and Kotagiri, which are quieter and have the better tea estates and viewpoints.
When to go
Best time to visit Ooty
October to June covers most of the year here. April to June is peak season, when the plains are hot — this is also when the flower show fills the botanical gardens in May.
September to November is quieter and clearer after the rains. December and January are cold, occasionally near freezing at night. July and August bring the south-west monsoon and heavy mist that hides the views.
Highlights
Top things to do in Ooty
The places most Ooty itineraries are built around.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway
A UNESCO-listed metre-gauge rack railway from Mettupalayam to Ooty, five hours of switchbacks and tunnels.
Botanical Gardens
Laid out in 1848 over 22 hectares, with a fossilised tree trunk and the May flower show.
Doddabetta Peak
The highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m, with views across to Coimbatore on a clear day.
Coonoor and Sim's Park
A quieter hill town 20 km down, with Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose above it.
Tea estates and factories
Plantation walks and factory tours through the Nilgiri tea belt.
Ooty Lake
Boating on the artificial lake built in 1824, best early before the crowds.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Ooty?
Three days covers Ooty and Coonoor at a reasonable pace. Four if you want the full toy train run rather than the short Ooty–Coonoor leg.
FAQs
Ooty questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Ooty trip.
Should we book the toy train in advance?
Yes, well in advance — it is a UNESCO site with limited seats and sells out weeks ahead in season. The full Mettupalayam run takes about five hours uphill; the Ooty–Coonoor leg is an hour and easier to get.
Is Coonoor better than Ooty?
Quieter and greener, with better tea estates and viewpoints, but fewer hotels and restaurants. Many people now base themselves in Coonoor and day-trip to Ooty.
How do we reach it?
Coimbatore is the nearest airport, around three hours by road up the ghats, or Mettupalayam by train and then the toy train. From Bangalore it is around seven hours by road via Mysore and Bandipur.
Is it too crowded in summer?
April to June is very busy, with heavy traffic on the ghat road and queues at the main sights. Visiting midweek, or coming in September and October instead, makes a large difference.
