About
Phuket travel guide
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and its most developed beach destination, with an airport that takes direct flights and a coastline that runs from packed Patong to quiet bays in the south.
Most of the best of it is offshore — Phi Phi, James Bond Island and the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay are all day trips from here.
When to go
Best time to visit Phuket
November to April is the dry season on the Andaman coast — calm seas, clear water and reliable island boats. December to February is peak, with the highest prices of the year.
May to October is the south-west monsoon: rougher seas, some boat trips cancelled and red flags on the beaches, but much lower rates and a greener island. Swimming off the west coast can be genuinely dangerous during this period — the rip currents are serious.
Highlights
Top things to do in Phuket
The places most Phuket itineraries are built around.
Phi Phi Islands
A full-day boat trip to Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island.
Phang Nga Bay
Limestone karsts rising from the sea, with James Bond Island and sea-cave canoeing.
Old Phuket Town
Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art and the Sunday walking street.
Big Buddha and Wat Chalong
A 45-metre marble Buddha on a hilltop, and the island's most important temple.
Beaches
Patong for noise and nightlife, Kata and Karon for a middle ground, Nai Harn and Freedom for quiet.
Promthep Cape
The southern tip of the island and the classic sunset spot.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Phuket?
Five to six days. Four is enough for the island and one boat trip; six lets you do both Phi Phi and Phang Nga and still have beach days.
FAQs
Phuket questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Phuket trip.
Phuket or Krabi?
Phuket has the airport, more nightlife and a wider range of hotels. Krabi is quieter and arguably more beautiful, with better rock scenery. They are two hours apart by boat and many trips include both.
Is swimming safe?
In the dry season, yes, on patrolled beaches. During the May to October monsoon, rip currents on the west coast kill people every year. Red flags mean do not enter the water — they are not advisory.
Is Maya Bay open?
It reopened after closure for reef recovery, but with visitor caps, restricted hours and no swimming in the bay itself. Boat operators work to the current rules, which change periodically.
Is it good for families?
Yes, particularly around Kata and Karon where the beaches are calmer and the resorts are family-oriented. Patong is better avoided with children for its nightlife.
