About
Bangkok-Pattaya travel guide
Bangkok and Pattaya together make the standard first Thailand trip from India — the capital's temples and markets, then a beach city two hours south-east.
Pattaya is not Thailand's prettiest coast, but it is the closest to Bangkok, has the widest range of organised activities and makes the logistics simple.
When to go
Best time to visit Bangkok-Pattaya
November to February is the best stretch for both — dry, cooler and the right weather for island day trips off Pattaya. This is also peak season for prices.
March to May is hot and humid. June to October brings the rains, usually as short heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day rain, with noticeably lower hotel rates. Sea conditions off Pattaya can be rough in the monsoon, which affects the island boats.
Highlights
Top things to do in Bangkok-Pattaya
The places most Bangkok-Pattaya itineraries are built around.
Coral Island
Ko Larn, a short boat ride from Pattaya, with clearer water and better beaches than the mainland.
Sanctuary of Truth
An all-teak carved temple on the shore at Pattaya, still being built after four decades.
Alcazar or Tiffany's show
The cabaret shows Pattaya is known for.
Nong Nooch Garden
Landscaped gardens, cultural shows and an elephant sanctuary south of the city.
Grand Palace and Wat Arun
The main Bangkok temples, usually taken in on the first or last day.
Floating market and Chatuchak
The Pattaya floating market, and Bangkok's weekend market if your dates fall right.

Five to six days is the standard: two or three nights in Bangkok and two or three in Pattaya, with a day trip to Coral Island.
FAQs
Bangkok-Pattaya questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Bangkok-Pattaya trip.
How far is Pattaya from Bangkok?
About 150 km, two to two and a half hours by road. Transfers are straightforward and most packages include them.
Is Pattaya suitable for families?
Parts of it, yes — Coral Island, Nong Nooch and the water parks work well with children, and the beachfront hotels are family-oriented. Walking Street and the surrounding nightlife area are best avoided with children, and it is easy to do so.
Is the sea good for swimming?
Pattaya's main beach is not especially clean. Jomtien is better, and Coral Island is considerably better again — most people do their swimming there.
Should we add Phuket or Krabi instead?
If beaches are the priority, yes — both are far more beautiful, but they need an extra flight and two or three more days. Pattaya's advantage is purely that it is close to Bangkok.
