About

Krabi travel guide

Krabi is the quieter half of Thailand's Andaman coast — limestone cliffs dropping into the sea, long-tail boats, and beaches that in places can only be reached by water.

Railay, cut off from the mainland by headlands, is the best known, and among the finest rock-climbing areas anywhere.

When to go

Best time to visit Krabi

November to April is the dry season, with calm seas and the clearest water for island hopping. December to February is the busiest and most expensive.

May to October brings the monsoon — rougher water, some cancelled boats and intermittent heavy rain, but far fewer people and much lower rates. The landscape is at its greenest.

FAQs

Krabi questions, answered

The things people ask us most before booking a Krabi trip.

Where should we stay — Ao Nang or Railay?+

Ao Nang has the restaurants, shops and boat connections and is easier as a base. Railay is more beautiful and much quieter, but everything arrives by boat and it is more expensive. Many people stay in Ao Nang and day-trip to Railay.

How do we get there?+

Krabi has its own airport with connections through Bangkok. It is also around two hours by ferry from Phuket, which is why the two are often combined.

Is it good for a honeymoon?+

It is one of the better options in Thailand for it — quieter than Phuket, with dramatic scenery and plenty of secluded resorts. Railay and the Tubkaak coast in particular.

Can beginners climb at Railay?+

Yes. Half- and full-day beginner courses run daily with equipment and instruction included, and the limestone is well bolted. No previous experience is needed.
