About
Vietnam travel guide
Vietnam runs 1,650 km from the Chinese border to the Mekong Delta, and the north and south feel like separate countries — limestone bays and mountain terraces up top, delta and beaches below.
It is excellent value, the food is among the best in Asia, and flights from India have become frequent enough to make it a realistic week-long trip.
When to go
Best time to visit Vietnam
The country is long enough that no single season covers it. For the north — Hanoi, Halong, Sapa — March to May and September to November are best, avoiding both winter cold and summer rain.
Central Vietnam, around Hoi An and Da Nang, is driest from February to May; September to November brings typhoons and flooding. The south is warm all year, with a dry season from December to April. A full-country trip usually targets March, April or October.
Highlights
Top things to do in Vietnam
The places most Vietnam itineraries are built around.
Halong Bay
Nearly 2,000 limestone islands, usually seen on an overnight boat; Lan Ha Bay is the quieter alternative.
Hoi An
A preserved trading port of lantern-lit streets, tailors and riverside cafés.
Hanoi Old Quarter
Thirty-six streets of commerce, street food and the Hoan Kiem lake.
Sapa
Rice terraces and hill tribe villages in the far north, with homestay treks.
Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum
Two difficult but essential stops around Ho Chi Minh City.
Mekong Delta
Floating markets and canal boats south of Ho Chi Minh City.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Vietnam?
Eight to ten days for north and central, or the full north-to-south run. Six is enough for Hanoi, Halong and one more stop; Vietnam rewards more time than people usually give it.
FAQs
Vietnam questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Vietnam trip.
Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Vietnam offers an e-visa to Indian passport holders which is applied for online before travel. Processing times and rules change periodically, so we confirm the current position and help with the application when you book.
North or south if we only have a week?
North, for most first-time visitors — Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh or Sapa make a coherent week without internal flights. The south needs the Mekong to justify itself and is better combined with central Vietnam.
Is Halong Bay worth an overnight cruise?
Yes. Day trips spend most of their time on the road from Hanoi. An overnight gets you to the quieter parts of the bay, and the early morning before the day boats arrive is the best of it.
Is it good value?
Among the best in Asia. Food, local transport and accommodation are all inexpensive by regional standards, and the main costs are flights and the Halong cruise.
