About
Sri Lanka travel guide
Sri Lanka fits beaches, tea country, ancient cities and leopard-holding national parks into an island you can cross in a day, which is why it works so well as a short international trip from India.
The flight is under three hours from most of south India, and the cultural overlap makes it one of the gentlest first trips abroad.
When to go
Best time to visit Sri Lanka
The island has two monsoons, so some part of it is always in season. December to March suits the west and south coasts and the cultural triangle; May to September suits the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay.
The hill country around Kandy and Ella is pleasant year-round, though it can be misty. July and August bring the Esala Perahera festival in Kandy, which is spectacular and books out months ahead.
Highlights
Top things to do in Sri Lanka
The places most Sri Lanka itineraries are built around.
Sigiriya
A fifth-century palace on top of a 200-metre rock, with frescoes and a lion-paw stairway.
Kandy
The Temple of the Tooth, and the hill country's cultural centre.
Ella and the train from Kandy
One of the world's great rail journeys, seven hours through tea estates.
Yala or Wilpattu
National parks with one of the highest leopard densities anywhere.
Galle Fort
A Dutch-built walled town on the south coast, best walked at sunset.
Whale watching at Mirissa
Blue whales offshore from December to April.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?
Eight to ten days for the full loop — cultural triangle, hill country, a safari and the south coast. Six works if you drop either the north or the beaches.
FAQs
Sri Lanka questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Sri Lanka trip.
Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka?
An ETA or visa is required for Indian passport holders, applied for online before travel. The scheme has changed more than once recently, including periods of free entry, so we confirm the current rules when you book.
Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it?
Yes — it is one of the most scenic rail journeys anywhere, through tea estates and past waterfalls. Reserved seats sell out well in advance; the unreserved carriages are standing room but have the open doorways people photograph.
How likely are we to see a leopard?
Yala block one has among the highest leopard densities in the world and sightings are common on a morning safari, though never guaranteed. Wilpattu is quieter with fewer jeeps and a more natural experience.
Is it affordable?
Yes, by international standards, and the short flight keeps the main cost down. Accommodation ranges from inexpensive guesthouses to high-end boutique hotels, and food and transport are cheap.
