About
Nepal travel guide
Nepal holds eight of the world's fourteen peaks above 8,000 m, including Everest, alongside the medieval durbar squares of the Kathmandu valley and the jungle of the Terai.
It is the most accessible Himalayan country for Indian travellers — no visa, direct flights, and an open land border.
When to go
Best time to visit Nepal
October and November give the clearest mountain views of the year and the best trekking conditions, after the monsoon has washed the air clean. March to May is the second season, warmer with rhododendron in flower but hazier.
June to September is the monsoon: trails are wet and leech-ridden and the mountains are usually hidden. December to February is cold and clear, good for lower treks and the valley, with high passes snowbound.
Highlights
Top things to do in Nepal
The places most Nepal itineraries are built around.
Kathmandu valley
The durbar squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, with Swayambhunath above them.
Pokhara
Phewa lake under the Annapurna range, and the gateway to the main treks.
Everest and Annapurna treks
Base Camp routes and the shorter Poon Hill circuit for those with less time.
Chitwan National Park
One-horned rhino, and occasionally tiger, in the Terai lowlands.
Pashupatinath and Boudhanath
The Hindu cremation ghats on the Bagmati, and one of the largest stupas in the world.
Mountain flight
An hour from Kathmandu along the Himalaya for an Everest view without the trek.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Nepal?
Six to seven days for Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan. Trekking needs its own allocation — Poon Hill around five days, Everest Base Camp fourteen or more.
FAQs
Nepal questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Nepal trip.
Do Indians need a visa for Nepal?
No. Indian nationals do not need a visa or passport, though a valid photo ID such as a voter ID card is required. A passport is still the simplest document to carry, particularly if flying.
How fit do we need to be for Everest Base Camp?
It is a long trek rather than a technical one — around fourteen days with daily walks of five to seven hours and altitude reaching 5,364 m. Good general fitness and a properly paced acclimatisation schedule matter more than mountaineering experience.
Can we see Everest without trekking?
Yes. The hour-long mountain flight from Kathmandu runs along the range with Everest visible, and there are viewpoints at Nagarkot and Dhulikhel in the valley. Poon Hill gives Annapurna and Dhaulagiri views on a five-day trek.
Is it affordable?
Among the most affordable Himalayan destinations. The absence of visa costs and the short flights help, and food and accommodation are inexpensive. Trekking permits and guides are the main additional cost.
