About
Malaysia travel guide
Malaysia splits across two land masses — the peninsula with Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi, and Malaysian Borneo with rainforest and orangutans.
It is one of the better-value destinations in South-East Asia, with excellent infrastructure, a large Indian community and food that reflects Malay, Chinese and Indian influences in equal measure.
When to go
Best time to visit Malaysia
The west coast — Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi — is driest from December to April. The east coast and Borneo run on the opposite cycle, with their dry season from March to October.
It is tropical and humid all year at 27–33°C, and rain usually comes as short heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. March and April tend to work well across most of the country.
Highlights
Top things to do in Malaysia
The places most Malaysia itineraries are built around.
Petronas Twin Towers
The skybridge and observation deck, and the KLCC park below at dusk.
Batu Caves
A limestone cave temple up 272 painted steps, with a 42-metre Murugan statue at the base.
Penang and George Town
A UNESCO-listed old town of shophouses and street art, and the best street food in the country.
Langkawi
Beaches, the SkyCab cable car and island-hopping boat trips.
Cameron Highlands
Tea plantations and strawberry farms in the cool hills above the plains.
Borneo
Orangutan sanctuaries at Sepilok, and Mount Kinabalu for climbers.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Malaysia?
Six to eight days for Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. Add four or five if you want Borneo, which really needs its own trip.
FAQs
Malaysia questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Malaysia trip.
Do Indians need a visa for Malaysia?
Malaysia has periodically offered visa-free entry to Indian passport holders, and at other times required an eNTRI or eVisa. Because the policy has changed repeatedly, we confirm the current rules for your travel dates when you book.
Is it good for vegetarians?
Very. There is a large Indian community, particularly in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and vegetarian and Jain food is easy to find. Chinese and Malay dishes often contain seafood or pork, so Indian restaurants are usually the safe default.
How does it compare with Thailand or Singapore?
Cheaper than Singapore and comparable to Thailand, with better infrastructure than Thailand outside the main tourist areas. It is less visually spectacular than Thailand's islands but easier to travel around.
Can we combine Malaysia with Singapore?
Commonly done — they share a land border and Kuala Lumpur to Singapore is under an hour by air. An eight to ten day combined trip is one of our more popular routes.
