About

Japan travel guide

Japan rewards planning more than most countries — trains that run to the second, cities that reward wandering, and a cultural depth that opens up the more time you give it.

The classic first trip is Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, linked by the Shinkansen, with Hakone or Nara added if time allows.

When to go

Best time to visit Japan

Late March to early April is cherry blossom, the most sought-after and most expensive time to go, with exact dates varying by a week or two each year. Late November is autumn colour, equally beautiful and slightly less crowded.

May and October are comfortable and less busy. June and July bring the rainy season, and August is hot and humid. December to February is cold but clear, with excellent skiing in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps.

Highlights

Top things to do in Japan

The places most Japan itineraries are built around.

  • 01

    Tokyo

Senso-ji, Shibuya crossing, Shinjuku at night, and the fish market at Toyosu.

  • 02

    Kyoto

Fushimi Inari's torii gates, Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama bamboo and the Gion district.

  • 03

    Mount Fuji and Hakone

Lake Ashi, the ropeway and hot springs, with Fuji visible on a clear day.

  • 04

    Nara

Todai-ji's great Buddha and the deer park, an easy day trip from Kyoto or Osaka.

  • 05

    Hiroshima and Miyajima

The Peace Memorial, and the floating torii gate across the bay.

  • 06

    Shinkansen

The bullet train itself, and the Japan Rail Pass that makes multi-city travel economical.

Trip length

How many days do you need in Japan?

Eight to ten days for Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and one or two side trips. Japan is a country where a fortnight feels short.

FAQs

Japan questions, answered

The things people ask us most before booking a Japan trip.

Do Indians need a visa for Japan?+

Yes, Indian passport holders need a visa, applied for through the embassy or an authorised agency. Japan has introduced eVisa facilities for Indian nationals in some cases. We confirm the current process and assist with documentation.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth buying?+

It depends on your route. For a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip with a Hiroshima side trip, usually yes. For a single return between two cities, often not. The pass price has risen, so we work it out against your actual itinerary.

Is it difficult without Japanese?+

Less than it used to be. Signage in cities and on trains is bilingual, and translation apps handle most of the rest. Rural areas are harder, and restaurant menus can be a challenge, but visitors manage routinely.

Is vegetarian food available?+

It takes planning. Dashi, a fish stock, is in a great deal of Japanese cooking even where no meat is visible. Indian restaurants are common in the big cities, and shojin ryori — Buddhist temple cuisine — is fully vegetarian. We flag suitable options in the itinerary.
