About
Georgia travel guide
Georgia sits where Europe meets Asia, with the Caucasus along its northern border, 8,000 years of winemaking, and a cuisine that most visitors do not expect to like as much as they do.
It has become popular with Indian travellers for the combination of mountain scenery, low prices and straightforward entry.
When to go
Best time to visit Georgia
May to June and September to October are the best months — mild, clear, and the right conditions for the mountains. September and October bring the grape harvest in Kakheti.
July and August are warm and busy, and the only reliable window for the high Caucasus around Ushguli and Tusheti. December to March is ski season at Gudauri, with much of the high country inaccessible.
Highlights
Top things to do in Georgia
The places most Georgia itineraries are built around.
Tbilisi old town
Sulphur baths, balconied houses and the Narikala fortress above the Mtkvari.
Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity
A fourteenth-century church on a ridge below Mount Kazbek, three hours north of Tbilisi.
Kakheti wine region
Qvevri winemaking in clay vessels buried underground, a method 8,000 years old.
Svaneti
Medieval stone defensive towers at Mestia and Ushguli, among the highest inhabited villages in Europe.
Mtskheta
The old capital, with Jvari Monastery above the river confluence.
Gudauri
The main ski resort, on the Georgian Military Highway.
Trip length
How many days do you need in Georgia?
Seven to eight days for Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Mtskheta and Kakheti. Add three or four for Svaneti, which is a long drive but the most striking part of the country.
FAQs
Georgia questions, answered
The things people ask us most before booking a Georgia trip.
Do Indians need a visa for Georgia?
Indian passport holders generally need a visa, with an eVisa available, though holders of certain valid US, UK, Schengen or GCC visas may enter without one under specific conditions. The rules are detailed and change, so we check your eligibility when you book.
Is it suitable for vegetarians?
Surprisingly good. Georgian cuisine has a strong vegetarian tradition because of Orthodox fasting — badrijani, lobio, pkhali and cheese-filled khachapuri are all staples. Indian restaurants are also common in Tbilisi.
Is it affordable?
Yes, noticeably cheaper than western Europe. Accommodation, food and wine are all inexpensive, and the main cost is the flight, usually routed through the Gulf.
How is the weather in the mountains?
Changeable, and the high passes are snowbound outside summer. The road to Kazbegi closes periodically in winter, and Svaneti and Tusheti are effectively summer-only.
